ABSTRACT
Soil carbon sequestration has been recognized as a significant method for climate change mitigation and adaptation. This review investigates the multidimensional impact of soil carbon sequestration in boosting soil health, improving agricultural output, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Human activities, particularly intensive agricultural methods, have resulted to significant soil carbon loss, leading to global warming and worsening soil quality. By implementing sustainable agricultural techniques such as crop rotation, less tillage, and the use of cover crops, it is feasible to raise soil organic carbon levels, thereby sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. The research analyzes the ways via which SOC is stabilized in soils, highlighting the role of soil texture, structure, and microbial activity. It illustrates the balance between carbon inputs from plant biomass and outputs through decomposition and erosion, controlled by climatic conditions including temperature and moisture. The paper also discusses the possibilities of various land management strategies to boost soil organic carbon storage, such as agroforestry and the application of organic amendments. Despite the intricacy of soil organic carbon dynamics and the influence of regional conditions, the article highlights the worldwide potential of soil carbon sequestration to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions significantly. Furthermore, it exposes gaps in current research and advocates for more detailed, site-specific studies to maximize soil carbon sequestration technologies. Overall, this study underlines the essential role of soil in the global carbon cycle and advocates for policies and practices that increase soil carbon storage as a realistic method to mitigate climate change and enhance ecosystem resilience.
